Description
This is a true one of a kind piece of art. The wood was hand sanded down to give the wavy edges. After that step was complete, the wood was placed in a custom mold and multiple layers of sparkly blue epoxy resin was poured. The next step was wood burning the commandments. Finally, the last layers of clear resin were poured on, allowed to dry, and finally sanded to give the nice rounded edges. The commandments are approximately 1 square foot and have a wire hanger on the back, so it is ready to be hung on your wall. Alternatively, it can be placed on an easel and displayed on a table or shelf (easel shown in photo is sold separately).
Read below to find out why we chose to use a sapphire blue resin to border the wood.
Many people think of the Ten Commandments as being engraved on tablets of gray stone. Let’s look again at what the Bible says in Exodus 24:10
and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness.
The pavement of sapphire was under God’s feet. The Hebrew word cappiyr can be translated as a sapphire or lapis lazuli. The sapphire is the only type of stone mentioned in the context. It is most likely that God engraved the Commandments as recorded two verses later in Exodus 24:12
The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.”
It is also possible that the tablets were engraved from God’s throne, Ezekiel 1:26
And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance.
Either way, both verses have the context of sapphire. These two accounts of God appearing are reasonable to conclude that the sapphire foundation and the sapphire play a distinctive role in God’s sovereign law. The tablets coming from God’s throne is consistent with both the narrative and the foundational importance of God’s law. Even today, the color blue is important. The color blue is to remind Israel to observe God’s law. Numbers 15:37-39
37The LORD said to Moses, 38“Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. 39And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, to do them, not to followe after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after.
Short of affirming as a fact, it makes sense that sapphire would be the color of the Ten Commandment stones. In this thought process, we desired to make this piece a closer rendition to the sapphire shown in Scripture.
